Pollution and mismanagement had prevented Valankulam – the Pearl of Coimbatore, from receiving enough waters to brim with, during the previous monsoons. This was mainly due to the blockage in the hume pipes laid on the channel that brings the surplus water from Coimbatore Big Tank (Periyakulam) to Valankulam.

This was brought to the notice of the District Collector Dr P Umanath IAS and as per his advice the NHAI officials prepared a detailed estimate for removing the blockage and to construct a Culvert costing Rs.17 Lakhs. This work was completed under the “Namakku Naame Thittam” of DRDA, Coimbatore in which Siruthuli contributed 1/3rd of the total project cost ( Rs. 5.67 Lakhs) as public contribution. The newly constructed culvert was dedicated to the public by the District Collector Dr P Umanath IAS, by opening the sluice from Periyakulam to Valankulam on 03.12.2010.
