While we were desilting first few tanks within Coimbatore, an attempt to find the source of River Noyyal was carried out. Siruthuli formed a group of 12 committed people from various walks of life and identified that group as Siruthuli’s Water Brigade. Captain Bordolai of 110 Batallion team helped us on this trekking. The team further divided into sub-teams to search parallel on different directions. These sub-teams, during the weekends, went on an expedition into the Western Ghats towards finding out all streams/rivulets that connects River Noyyal. The team made a detailed study on the flow of various streams (typically called as pallam) and brooks that originates from Western Ghats and finally confluences all by itself into River Noyyal.
More than 10 trips were attempted to find the rivulets of River Noyyal. The sub-teams moved out in all directions. While couple of teams moved from Kooduthurai to the upstreams of Chinnar, Periyaar and Kanchimanadhi, there was a team that was moving down from Vaidegi Falls, Narasipuram, parts of Boluvampatti and adjoining forest area near Thenamanallur etc. Over a period of study, for about two months and more, all their findings were put together to have meaningful observations. By the end of their study, the water brigade team observed that they have identified 32 major jungle streams and brooks that really constitute the water source of Mother Noyyal. Names and demographic details of those streams were documented for future references. Thus, this specific activity became our first and forerunner activity towards the restoration of River Noyyal.
