During the year 2005, due to abundant rainfall in the catchment areas, the 11.5 km stretch on Chithirai Chavadi Channel and its surrounding areas yielded lots of gushing waters to the chain of tanks in the city viz., Krishnampathy, Selvampathy and Kumarasamy.
On 2nd of August 2005, water started overflowing from Selvampathy tank into Kumarasamy Kulam. The encroachers in the 21 acres water-bed area of Selvampathy Tank had an apprehension that the water may come into their huts through the drainage created by them (into the tank). Due to panic, the dwellers had deliberately opened up the earthen bund and allowed water level to recede.
Siruthuli, as an emergency care, dumped 1000 sand bags and strengthened the northern bund near surplus weir and the same has brought in control over the situation.
