On 2nd November 2006, at around 11:00 pm, the well-wishers of Siruthuli, informed us of plans to sabotage valankulam tank by breaching the earthen bund. Some people with vested interests in order to prevent water-logging at encroached hutments on the tank started cutting the bund using a JCB. On getting this information, Siruthuli staff initiated prompt legal action against the culprits, who were immediately arrested and taken to custody by the police, thus saving thousands of lives and property worth thousands of crores in and around the tank. Thanks to the prompt action from Siruthuli staff, Government officials and Fisher folks, the disaster was averted. Later, a mega function was held to felicitate and honor the fisher folks and local residents who were primarily responsible for alerting us in protecting water bodies.
