Perur Padithurai

Long ago it was found that one cow used to pour its milk over an anthill regularly in the forest.  There people found a self manifested Shiva lingam. From that time, the worship of the Lord is supposed to have started in this temple. The impression of the cow’s feet and its horn can be still found on the Shiva lingam.   This temple is situated on the banks of Mother Noyyal.

Few meters down the temple is Padithurai, where people gather in large numbers to thank the God Varuna for the bountiful monsoon and to pay homage to their loved ones who have attained the lotus feet of the Lord. This auspicious day is observed on the first week of August every year.

Perur Padithurai Desilting Work

Over the years due to neglect and callous attitude of people, the holy river lost its sanctity and was almost reduced to a sewage canal.  Accumulation of silt and dumping of plastics by devotees further aggravated the situation.

As its first step towards restoring the glory of Mother Noyyal, Siruthuli undertook the task of desilting and cleaning the river at Padithurai. Three days of hard and committed work by the volunteers of Siruthuli saw Padithurai regain its lost glory. And as token of appreciation Mother Nature showered her blessing by way of rains on the third day.

 Perur Padithurai Cleaning

On the eve of Aadi Perukku 2008, officials from Perur temple trust board requested Siruthuli to clean up Perur Padithurai, remove debris from the river bed and also to reclaim the land (about 1 acre) that was encroached on the opposite side of Padithurai. Siruthuli acknowledged that request and immediately started our work by engaging poclains, tippers and dozers.

The path that connects Perur Padithurai and the temple had almost 200 tons of solid waste dumped.   Since it was occupying more space, it was creating lot of problems to those people who are on their pilgrimage.   By removing the dump and leveling the surface, Siruthuli created sufficient parking place for the vehicles.

When we started removing the debris from the river bed, there was no flow on the river and it was completely dry.   After four days of continuous work with the earth moving equipments, Padithurai regained it lost glory.   And, as a token of appreciation, Mother Nature showered her blessings with full flow of river right on the day of completion of our work.

Such is the law of nature.  If we care for her she will in turn take care of us.
